For the purposes of analyzing the global economy by company, the focus below is on the names of “Top Parent” companies. Where IBM is listed as the top parent representing the whole of the company, with no need to list any of its many subsidiaries.
The largest 2,000 top parent companies account for > 50% of global GDP.
Another key insight is that the largest 2,000 companies compete, on average, in approximately 30 industries (where industries are defined at the granular, Porter five-forces level).
